The South Carolina State Conference continues a months long investigation into reports of abuse by officers of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. At the urging of the NAACP, members of the Legislative Black Caucus were successful in elevating the debate about the conduct of certain officers in the department. Those concerns ultimately encompassed the directory of Public Safety and the head of the highway patrol, both of whom have since been relieved of their responsibilities.
